In Celebration of a Dissertation on Some Ancient Philosophers

For Barry Vaughan
6 March 1999

Years hence,
as evening falls
and mind rises
above clutter of academic success—
papers amended,
positions abandoned,
an old argument on the virtues, republished,
but vaguely remembered—
take down this bottle, if any be left,
and pour a glass to your own revisions.
Another to mine.
Another for their memory,
and another as night passes on,
for they had forgotten the form for flux.
